L'huile sur bois (la grange) témoigne d'une technique si parfaitement maîtrisée qu'on croirait voir de l'aquarelle. Beaucoup de finesse, de sensibilité.
La perfection est proche.

I am pleased to say I have two landscapes by F. W. Schilbach, one of which has a place of pride over the fireplace in my home. The other which awaits a proper space for mounting following our relocation to Québec came to me through my parents following the sale of their home in Oakville, Ontario.

Both are what I believe to be in the classic style of the artist: rural Ontario, late winter or early spring light with traces of snow, early 20th century weathered barn, discarded oildrum used for burning of refuse in the foreground.

I purchased these in, I believe either late 1976 or early 1977, at the Lord Simcoe Art Gallery. One

Regrettably, one hears little of the artist and the Internet sources are surprisingly silent. Can someone point me in the direction of more information about this artist?

If any information about F. W. Schilbach is available I would appreciate direction to the source. I may be reached at:

I have two large landscapes as well. Both from the early 1970s bought in Toronto. I heard he was from northern Ontario and was told he painted only when he needed the income. I don't know if that is true. Very talented. He seemed to vanish.

I bought my first Schilbach in the late 1960s. I bought more during the 1970s - four downtown Toronto scenes, a self portrait and scenes with horses and cows.
Have been looking for more information on the painter for some time. The last I heard he was out west and a gallery in Vancouver was selling the paintings.

According to a gallery pamphlet (Lord Simcoe Art Gallery in Toronto) my mother gave me with a Schilbach landscape FW Schilbach is a nephew of the lat Rudolph Schilbach, famous Austrian painter. FWS, native to Vienna, emigrated to Canada in 1953. He specialized in Toronto street scenes and landscapes of the country around Lake Simcoe.

Does the gallery pamphlet give anymore information such as, date of birth? schooling etc?

Rob

The gallery pamphlet is by McKenzie Porter and is probably from the 1970's and says the 49 year old emigrated from Vienna in 1953.
I have 3 paintings of his I'm looking to sell.
