These were grown from seeds from Sperli (41.707) who don't mention a specific variety and there are many and they recommend harvesting from July to October. We are in january now and they are ripe. Excellent, tender, sweet... Here where orange trees grow they are perenials.
Ther is not alot of information on the internet as to how to eat a melon pear and most of what is there is mostly discouraging. You can eat them ripe right of the bush with or with out the skin, in peis or compote even as a vegetable in a stir fry. It is very generous plant - not stingy with its fruit.
A melon pear already has 2 flavours : both melon and pear (some think it has a cucumber taste but that must be a poor variety). So we can add 1 more flavour without creating a cacaphony.
A drop of fresh lime juice - yes, very good.(Photo LOF - melon pear plant)
