The cork oak produces cork, shade and acorns (bolota).
The acorns produce excellent iberian ham from black alentejo pigs from Barrancos or - macerated in alcohol and sugar - a liquer « licor de bolota ».Buy a bottle when you are in the south of Portugal.
The long green melon - white inside is a Melão de Almeirim. Cut into large pieces it takes on a forest-like perfume when showered with licor de bolota.
The result is worth the trip. Its not easy to know which liquer goes well with which melon.
Licor de bolota is served with your coffee at the Tasca do Celso - an excellent Alentejan restaurant in Vila Nova de Milfontes .
