A late winter afternoon of long blue shadows on a cold day. An almost turquoise sky that you sometimes get on a really cold day. It reminds me of Ottawa backyards with wooden garages piled high with snow.
George Franklin Arbuckle (1909-2001) was born in Toronto Ontario.
He studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty, F.S. Challener, J.E.H. MacDonald. He also taught art at the Northern Vocational School in Toronto from 1932-38, and at the Franz Johnston Summer School in Georgian Bay from 1932-40.
He was married to Frances-Anne Johnston, daughter of Group of Seven member Franz Johnston.
Member of Ontario Society of Artists. G.F. Arbuckle was made president of the Royal Canadian Academy from 1960-64.
He is represented in the I.B.M. Collection of Contemporary Art, and the R.C.A. Diploma Collection in the National Gallery of Canada.
He exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy from 1932-66, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1946-67. His knowledge of historical subjects helped him as an illustrator, his landscapes, cityscapes and figurative paintings are typically mid 20th century.
This landscape seems to be quite typical of his some of his better work which you can find in the McCord museum in Montreal.

Magnifique peinture où le bleu ceruleum est employé à dose homéopathique pour le plus éclatant résultat.

Pour répondre à François, pas des aquarelles, mais des huiles!
C'est justement ce qui est fort: peindre à l'huile avec une main et un oeil d'aquarelliste.

Je n'étais pas venu depuis longtemps, mais j'y reviens toujours un jour dans cette ferme enneigée. Je crois y entendre chanter Félix Leclerc.

J'ai retrouvé hier une reproduction de la célèbre toile de Monet "la pie" aujourd'hui exposé au musée d'Orsay. Il y a quelque chose de commun avec ce tableau -- à part la neige, bien sûr -- bien qu'il soit plus "pimpant" (le Monet a une palette plus centrée autour du terre de Sienne).
